Talented Palekh artist Bokalova is the artist who painted this traditional scene of speeding winter troikas.
A couple traveled the snow-covered expanses of Russian countryside sitting in the sledge pulled at high speed by three mighty horses. The horses are painted in traditional orange, white, and red tempera paints that look so beautiful against the black background. Tiny silver dots are drawn throughout the scene to imitate swirling snowflakes. Gold paint is used to detail the sledge, the characters costumes and the horses harness.
The edges of the lid and the box's sides are adorned with a golden dot ornament. More complex flower ornament painted in gold is decorated the sides of the box.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name.
